As parents of four children ourselves, Shannon and Scott Miles understand what families are looking for. The Four School Districts of Lamar County

Lamar County is served by four independent school districts, each with its own character and strengths. This diversity means families can choose the environment that fits their children best.

Paris ISD is the largest district in the county, serving the City of Paris. It offers the most extensive array of programs, including Advanced Academics, Career and Technical Education pathways, and a wide range of clubs and organizations. Paris High School athletics have earned state championships in football, baseball, golf, and track and field. The district also offers pre-athletics beginning in fifth grade, giving younger students a head start in sports.

North Lamar ISD serves the northern portion of Paris and the communities of Reno, Sun Valley, Arthur City, Chicota, Powderly, and Sumner. North Lamar is known for its strong FFA program and its close-knit school culture. The district's FFA chapter has been recognized for awarding Greenhand degrees to its members, and students regularly compete in the Lamar County Junior Livestock Show.

Chisum ISD is a smaller rural district south of Paris that serves the Chisum community. The Lamar County 4-H chapter has 191 active members, including 20 Clover Kids (the youngest members) and 28 adult volunteer leaders. Projects span agriculture and livestock, family and community health, leadership and citizenship, natural resources, and STEM.

The annual Lamar County Junior Livestock Show is one of the biggest events of the year for youth in the region. Students from all four districts compete with livestock projects they have raised and cared for over many months. It is a hands-on education in responsibility, hard work, and sportsmanship that serves these students well in every area of life.

FFA chapters are active at every high school in the county. Students compete in livestock judging, public speaking, agricultural mechanics, and leadership competitions. The Paris District FFA Leadership Camp, hosted at Prairiland ISD, brings together students from across the region for training and fellowship.

Youth Sports and Recreation

For families whose children are more interested in sports than livestock, Northeast Texas has plenty to offer. The Paris Sports League is a nonprofit athletic organization offering competitive sports for athletes ages 10 to 18. The league welcomes families from all educational backgrounds and provides a structured, positive environment for youth sports.

The Paris Recreation Department offers progressive youth sports programs including T-ball, basketball, and golf. These programs are designed to introduce younger children to sports in a fun, low-pressure setting. At the high school level, Paris ISD athletics offer football, baseball, golf, softball, track and field, volleyball, cross country, and basketball. The district has a strong tradition of athletic success, with state championships across multiple sports. The smaller districts also offer enrichment opportunities, though they may look different. In Chisum and Prairiland, where the student body is smaller, students often have the chance to participate in a wider variety of activities because the schools need every willing student. Some of the best family moments in Northeast Texas happen outside of school. The community calendar is full of events that bring families together. The 903 Sunsets summer concert series on the Paris courthouse square, the Festival of Pumpkins in the fall, the Red River Valley Fair, and the annual Balloon Festival are just a few of the traditions that families look forward to year after year.

The Trail de Paris offers a safe, paved path for walking, biking, and running with kids and dogs. It runs through the heart of town and connects several parks. For families who want to spend time outdoors, Cooper Lake State Park, Lake Crook, and Pat Mayse Lake are all within a short drive and offer fishing, swimming, hiking, and camping.

The farmers market on the square, holiday parades, and the annual Christmas tree lighting are the kinds of traditions that make a town feel like home.
