Moving to Northeast Texas with school-age children? Enrollment is more straightforward than most families expect, but the paperwork matters. You will need proof of residency, proof of identity, prior school records, and a current immunization record. Here is exactly what to gather before you call the district office.
Under Texas law, every child has the right to attend the public school district where the family resides. Enrollment is handled locally by each district, so the specific forms and drop-off details vary from one campus to the next. But the state-required documents are consistent, and knowing them ahead of time makes the whole move smoother.
What Documents Do I Need to Enroll My Child in a Texas School?
In most cases you will provide four things: proof of residency, proof of identity for the child, records from the previous school, and a current immunization record. If you are missing one piece, ask the campus registrar right away. Texas allows provisional enrollment in many situations, so a missing record does not have to delay your child's first day.
- Proof of residency. A lease, a recent utility bill in the parent's name, a rent receipt, or a property tax statement for the address.
- Proof of identity. A birth certificate or another approved form of identification.
- Prior school records. A transcript, report card, or records from the school the child last attended.
- Immunization record. A record that meets the Texas Minimum State Vaccine Requirements.
Step 1: Find Out Which District and Campus Serves Your Address
In Texas, your home address determines the district your child attends, so confirm the campus before you buy or lease. Near Paris and Lamar County, the districts to know are Paris ISD, North Lamar ISD, Chisum ISD, and Prairiland ISD, with Rivercrest ISD serving parts of southwestern Red River County around Bogata and Talco. Each district serves a defined attendance area, and the Texas Education Agency's school locator can point you to the campus for a specific address.
If you are buying a brand-new home, zoning is set before the first foundation is poured. Forestbrook Estates in Paris, for example, is zoned to Paris ISD. That is why we always confirm the feeder pattern for a new build before our clients choose a lot. For a closer look at how districts compare, see our guide to choosing the right school district and the Paris and Lamar County district guide.
Step 2: Gather Proof of Residency
Districts use residency documents to confirm the child lives within their attendance area. The most common accepted proof is a lease or a recent utility bill in the parent's or guardian's name with the service address, though a rent receipt or property tax statement can also work. Call the campus registrar before you arrive so you know exactly which documents that district will accept.
Families moving into a newly built home sometimes ask what to show before closing day. If your property has not closed yet, ask the district how it handles that situation. Many will accept a purchase contract or closing statement in the interim, and some offer provisional enrollment while your final paperwork comes together.
Step 3: Provide Prior School Records
Your child's previous school will release records to the new district once the new campus requests them. In the meantime, a transcript, report card, or report of the last year's attendance and grades lets the new school place your child correctly. If you are moving mid-year, ask your current school for the records before you leave so you are not waiting on them after the move.
Step 4: Bring a Current Immunization Record
Texas requires certain vaccines for school entry, set by the Texas Department of State Health Services. The record your doctor's office prints is usually enough. A Tdap booster is required for 7th grade, and students in grades 8 through 12 may need one as well if 10 years have passed since their last tetanus-containing dose. If your child is missing vaccines, the district can help you understand what is needed, and a medical or conscientious exemption form can be filed where it applies.
What If I Am Missing a Document? Provisional Enrollment Can Help
This is the question we hear most from relocating families, and the answer is good news. Texas allows provisional enrollment for up to 30 days while families finish their paperwork. If your child is transferring from another Texas school, moving in from out of state, or progressing toward the required immunizations, the district can often start your child in class immediately and finalize the records as they arrive.
Moving Mid-Year: Sports and Extracurricular Eligibility
If your child plans to join athletics, band, or another UIL activity soon after a mid-year move, ask the new school's athletic coordinator or activities director about eligibility rules. Texas has specific guidelines for students who change schools, so it pays to check before your child is cleared to compete. The school will give you a straight answer about what applies to your family's situation.
How Long Does Enrollment Take?
In most Northeast Texas districts, a family with complete documents can finish registration in a single visit. You will fill out the enrollment packet, meet with the registrar, and learn the child's start date and classroom. After that, practical questions like bus routes and drop-off times are usually handled by the campus office.
